BBC director general Mark Thompson recently said that emerging connected platforms such as the BBC-backed YouView will trigger an “intense battle for the living room” over the coming years. For Virgin Media, that battle has already begun. Last month, the cable operator launched its new converged TV platform powered by US DVR giant TiVo. Using the conduit of a high-powered set top box, the service offers 160 television channels, 4,600 hours of standard and high definition on-demand content, and a variety of apps and games for the TV. Most interestingly, the new system actively learns each user’s TV preferences, and then throws up suggestions about what they should watch next. Digital Spy checked out the TiVo box to see if this really is the future of TV, or just an expensive sideshow.
